Peter Scott – PA 0758
Madresfield is one of the most relaxed vintage motoring events of the VSCC calendar. The setting,
which is very picturesque, is the long straight drive which leads to Madresfield Court with
the Malvern hills beyond. This venue has been used by the club for many years and this event is
perhaps better known for its picnic than for the rather gentle driving tests. As in other years
there were many interesting cars in the paddock and the member’s car park. Plenty of time was allowed
for lunch and discussions with friends old and new.
Before and after the picnic there is also time to participate in some driving tests. The tests
which have remained substantially the same for many years, all take place in a straight line along
the drive. These include a slow/fast test which involves driving as slowly as possible without
touching any controls other than the accelerator and steering wheel. The 1892 Salveson steam cart,
which has taken part for the past two years, had a distinct advantage for this element of the competition,
if not for the rest of it. Yes, there is a great variety of vehicles taking part. Sadly there was only
two MG’s taking part this year. In addition to my PA there was also a very pretty M driven by David
Rushton. The ‘pork chop’ test kept the spectators amused as the drivers attempted to pass their offside
front wheel to one side of the target and their offside rear wheel to the other without touching it.
Many fail to do so. After completing a test which involves swapping two petrol cans between two bar
stools, the final challenge is a straight acceleration test down the drive.
A very enjoyable day. So if you are a VSCC member and enjoy a relaxing day, having fun with vintage
cars, I can thoroughly recommend Madresfield to you.
